Solution: Watch out for unnatural hyphenations when reviewing the converted file and delete them. So a word like organization may appear as organi-zation on one line. If the Word page settings do not align with the original PDF document, the hyphens will be retained whether they are needed or not. Issues with hyphenated words: If a word is hyphenated because it is split on two lines as in documents that use justified alignment, it can cause confusion in PDF to Word file conversion. If you detect one such spelling error, do a ‘search and replace’ to implement corrections in the entire document. Solution: As Word’s spell check feature will highlight misspelled words, they can be detected and manually corrected by proofreading the document. For instance, “w” can be misinterpreted as “vv” or “Li” as “U”. Incorrect words: Two letters that appear close to each other are often misinterpreted by standard PDF to Word conversion algorithms and also OCR. For example, there’s one fruit that you can normally only gather a few of at a time, but for a couple of days you can harvest many of them at once. "I especially appreciated how so many little things would change as time passed. He says he really enjoyed details like the festival decorations in the town during seasonal events, and the sound effects that continued to play even when the music stopped. I ask Nakano if he's played Stardew Valley - a game indebted to Harvest Moon and Story of Seasons, but which many believe pushed the series’ ideas further than they had been before - and he has. "However, I also think more people have grown interested in Story of Seasons thanks to an increase in and a mutually beneficial relationship with wonderfully playable titles like Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley." Story of Seasons has always been committed to this design philosophy. "But the ones you see nowadays are designed to be easy to pick up and play. "I’m not sure how cleanly Story of Seasons fits into the mold of the simulation game genre, but I used to assume that such games were difficult and had these unbearably thick manuals," he says. More broadly, Nakano is happy to see how much more accessible gaming has become - not just in terms of platforms, but in design as well. He also notes that technological developments over the years have given developers more tools and ways to express themselves, but have also made it more challenging to balance games and tie their different elements together. I’ll always be rooting for the success of the Story of Seasons series as it continues to grow and evolve." "This beloved series has come so far thanks to the enthusiasm of the fans who play these games, as well as the love and devotion of everyone who has contributed to them. But he did have a statement to share in honor of the series' 25th: "Reminiscing on the difficult early days of development stirs up so many emotions within me," he says. The original creator of Story of Seasons, Yasuhiro Wada, has recently been working on his own separate projects like Birthdays: The Beginning and Little Dragon's Cafe. He says he believes that the introduction of portable platforms had "the greatest impact in the series' history," and that development of Story of Seasons has shifted deliberately in the direction of portability in recent years. Nakano is no stranger to the massive changes the games industry has seen over Story of Seasons' lifespan, and has seen firsthand how those changes have impacted the genre it helped pioneer. Part of the series’ uniqueness lies in how it embraces that theme, and it’s one of the biggest reasons to play it."īut for a series that, outwardly, seems to have changed so little, the director does point out a number of crucial shifts over the years. But do we really want to live our whole lives this way? This series has always sought to explore that fundamental question. "City life has its benefits and conveniences. "The series’ main themes have changed gradually over time, but I think you could sum up its simplest theme as the desire to live in the countryside away from the big city," the director says, speaking to IGN. And now, he's the director on both Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town and Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town. As the series moved to the DS, he worked as assistant producer on Harvest Moon DS: Cute and as producer and director on Harvest Moon DS: Island of Happiness, among other games. He first worked on the games as a designer for Harvest Moon 64 (which he says remains his favorite game in the series), and returned for other titles including Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland for PS2 and Harvest Moon: Magical Melody for the GameCube. Hikaru Nakano has been with the series since before we knew it as Story of Seasons in North America, and has seen a run of farming games through numerous iterations. And if you look to the genre the series pioneered as a source of comfort rather than novelty, like I do, that's just fine and dandy. In fact, rather like its protagonists' farms, it has nestled into a cozy repetition. 2021’s installment of Story of Seasons may have changed name (having ditched the Harvest Moon moniker when its developers broke off from publisher Natsume) but the plotline and gameplay goals have changed very little. Recognize that second kanji? It’s the one for “ogre.” His original name meant “Great Ogre” or “Great Demon.” Judging by his name, you would think it means “demon” and you would be correct.īut in the original game his name was actually Gouki and it was spelled 豪鬼. The Japanese expression 鬼に金棒 (oni ni kanabou) originates out of this image of a kanabou wielding ogre and it means “to be undefeatable.”īy the way, if you’ve ever played Street Fighter then I’m sure you’re familiar with the character named Akuma. They usually wear loincloths or clothing made out of tiger-skin, and they typically wield a large iron club with a spiky ball design on them called a 金棒 (kanabou). Down in Hell, he runs into Goz and Mez – a red and a blue Oni! That is one of the reasons why it can be interpreted as meaning either word.Įver watched Dragon Ball Z? I loved that anime as a kid! There was one episode when Goku was traveling along Snake Way on his way to meet King Kai, and he falls off. These are the ones that look similar to the Western culture’s ogre. That ought to show you the relation between the two words.īut 鬼 relates more to the red or blue demons that can be found in Japanese folklore. If you take a look at the kanji for “ogre” 鬼 and also a close look at the kanji for “demon” 魔 you will notice that 鬼 is a radical in 魔. It’s used in the word 悪魔払い (akuma barai) which means “exorcism.” And it is also a part of a movie’s name that you’ve probably heard before: 悪魔のいけにえ = The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The word 悪魔 is used as part of some other words like 悪魔の宴 (akuma no utage) meaning either “Black Sabbath” or a “Witches Sabbath.” What do one of these 悪魔 look like? Typically they are the guys with red skin, horns, a pointed tail, and sometimes the lower half is even that of a beast’s. But you might also see his name written in katakana as サタン. This is the word that is used to refer to demons from Western cultures and in particular to the devil Satan. The word 悪魔 is made up of the kanji for “bad” 悪 and the kanji for “demon” 魔. Later on I will talk about some specific demons from Japanese folklore.ġ0) Had Enough Demons for One Day? 悪魔 (akuma) – Demon, Devil, or Fiend Many specific demons will fall into one of these three groups depending on its nature. Think of these as “demon families” if you will. I’ll start off with the three big groups of demons: Akuma, Oni, and Youkai. It could refer to an ogre, an evil spirit, or any number of monsters from the underworld. Well today I’ve got quite a few of them for you! Why so many? Well, the word “demon” is a little generic and is used to describe all kinds of different beings. So just what is the Japanese word for Demon? Or you’re watching an anime and the main hero is fighting against the denizens of hell! Either way, you need to know what they’re called and the different kinds you might run into.Īs for me, I just finished Final Fantasy XV the other day (I highly recommend it) and the monsters that came out at night were known as “Daemons” in English, but the Japanese word that is used for them is シガイ (shigai) lit. Let’s face it… there are a lot of baddies out there! You’re playing a JRPG and you’re going up against all manner of beasts and brutes! (Note: pesticide product registration is renewed annually and product names and formulations may vary from year to year.) When using herbicides, always read and follow all label instructions and obey all label precautions. Aminopyralid products will not harm grass and can be used around livestock (provided all label precautions are followed). It is also effective in the fall before a killing frost. Be aware, glyphosate is non-selective and will injure any plants that it comes in contact with, including grass.įor selective control of hawkweed in agricultural settings (pastures, hayfields, etc.), an herbicide containing the active ingredient aminopyralid (example: Milestone, Milestone VM, etc.) may be applied in the spring to plants in the pre-bud to early bud growth stage. Spray each plant thoroughly on the stems and leaves, enough to be wet but not dripping. The goal is to insure all plants have emerged. Spot spraying with an herbicide containing the active ingredient glyphosate (Roundup Pro, Glyfos, etc.) may be used effectively in the spring while the plant is in the pre-bud to early bud growth stage. Treatment with nitrogen will help other grasses to competitively suppress hawkweed growth.Įarly season treatment with 2, 4 D plus dicamba (as in Weedmaster, etc.) can be an effective chemical control for Yellow Devil hawkweed. Bag and dispose of the plants in the garbage. Monitor the site where plants have been dug out for possible re-growth. Be aware that this species of hawkweed can reproduce from small root fragments, so it is important to get the whole root. Hand pulling or digging up isolated plants and small patches can help control Yellow Devil Hawkweed. Above all, prevent plants from going to seed. As usual with invasive species, the best control measure for Yellow Devil Hawkweed is prevention. The pollen released from its flowers discharges toxins that inhibit the seed germination, seedling emergence, and saprophytic growth of surrounding plants.Įarly detection and eradication are important to prevent the spread of hawkweed. Yellow Devil hawkweed is one of only 6 known Pollen Allelopathic plants. It infests meadows, roadsides and fields and is especially invasive on poorer acidic soils. Its creeping growth fills in the gaps between other plants forming mats of rosettes and prevents other plants from establishing seedlings. Hawkweeds are aggressive competitors of native plants and desirable vegetation. In mid to late spring the stems are topped with 3 to 50 bright yellow flower heads in a flat-topped cluster, closely resembling a dandelion. The top of the leaf is smooth while the underside has scattered, bristly hairs, particularly along the mid-rib. The single flowering stem grows up to 32 inches tall, and is sparsely covered with bristly blackish hairs. The plant has a basal rosette of narrow, pointed leaves, which are covered with a whitish or bluish waxy coating. Meaning: From the Greek meaning a hawk, referring to belief that hawks fed on the plant to strengthen eyesight Yellow Devil Hawkweed Hieracium floribundum The author and activist Jim Forest writes that “the Greek word used in the Our Father for ‘forgive,’ aphiemi, means simply to let go, set aside or leave behind. Peter, perhaps thinking himself very charitable and gracious indeed, asked Jesus, “Lord, how often will my brothers sin against me and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” But Jesus replied to him, “not seven times, but seventy times seven times.” (Mt 18.21-22) When, in the fullness of time, Jesus came to save us, central to his ethical teachings is the forgiveness of wrongs done. God is, in short, in the forgiveness business.ĭo not forgive seven times, but seventy times seven times. The revelation we find in the sacred words is the story of an all-loving God forgiving a sinful humanity and reconciling them to himself (and one another). It is, in a way, the whole point of the story of the Bible. But it is just as much a challenge for us to forgive those who have done us wrong.įorgiveness, of course, runs all through Scripture. In fact, “Joseph wept when they spoke to him.” This picture of the forgiveness of Joseph’s brothers is an icon of the forgiveness of God toward us. If Jacob had wanted this, would he not have told Joseph directly?īut the lie does not matter Joseph does not care. The brothers therefore make up a lie: “Your father gave us this instruction before he died, ‘Say to Joseph: I beg you, forgive the crime of your brothers and the wrong they did in harming you.’” It is an obvious lie. This picture of the forgiveness of Joseph’s brothers is an icon of the forgiveness of God toward us. “What if Joseph still bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong that we did to him?” they ask. But now, the brothers fear, Joseph will use his power and authority to give them their just desserts. Perhaps Joseph only pretended to forgive so that he would not break his father’s heart. Joseph, who had long ago been sold into slavery by his brothers, had also long since forgiven them.īut now that Jacob is dead, the brothers, thinking that perhaps Joseph had only feigned forgiveness to spare his father more sorrow, are worried that Joseph will now enact his revenge. This takes place at the end of the patriarch Jacob’s life. One of the most moving portions of Scripture, to me, is the final chapter of the Book of Genesis. The command to love the Lord our God is coupled with the command to love our neighbor as ourselves. And, scripturally speaking, there is no turning toward God without turning toward one another. In this sense it is to turn one’s mind toward God. To repent is literally to change one’s mind. “Repent!” cries out Jesus in Matthew’s Gospel, “for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” During Lent, preaching like this is front and center in the life of the church. He had pronounced the absolution without giving me prayers to say or Scriptures to read or some good deed to be accomplished. Just go! Repent and believe the good news!” If I’d given you something more to do, either you’d do it and think you earned God’s grace or you’d fail and think you let God down. “I told you to enjoy the mercy and love of God. We sat across from each other in the room, and I recounted my sins as the priest listened with a peace and calm-a joy, even-that revealed a confidence in God’s mercy for sinners.īut he had pronounced the absolution without giving me prayers to say or Scriptures to read or some good deed to be accomplished. So I asked for the absolution of God and his church. In the course of that hour, though, it became clear that what I really needed was to be unburdened of my sins. I had only asked for a meeting with Father to speak about my spiritual life. Normally the penitent stands before an icon of Christ, with the priest to the side as a witness to the confession. And it was not in the format I had grown to expect in the Byzantine Rite. I had not planned on confession that day. “Uh, Father? You forgot to give me a penance.” I was sitting in my pastor’s study, a much younger man than I am today, my cheeks tear-streaked and my shame revealed.
